Inspired by the Star Wars character Darth Maul, this project reimagines his appearance as a traditional Japanese Oni mask. More than a reinterpretation of a character, the intention was to create an object that feels handcrafted and timeless, inspired by ceremonial masks that preserve centuries of history, symbolism, and craftsmanship.
The primary focus of this project was to improve my texturing workflow, exploring layered materials, micro surface details, natural wear, and subtle imperfections to recreate the look of aged painted wood.
The mask was sculpted in ZBrush, retopologized and UV-mapped in Maya, textured and baked in Substance Painter, rendered in Marmoset Toolbag, and finally refined in Photoshop.
